At what AI maturity level are you?

Christian Blom |

The AI revolution isn't just coming; it's here. But where does your organization truly stand in this rapidly evolving landscape? We've outlined an "AI Maturity Index" – not a formal certification, but a practical guide to assess your current standing, anticipate challenges, and strategically plan your next moves.

Level 1: The Advanced Search – Playing It Safe (But Watch Out!)

At this foundational stage, you're likely leveraging tools like ChatGPT or similar solutions for basic queries. Think redrafting emails, quick translations, or gathering preliminary information. The initial results can be genuinely impressive, making you feel like you've unlocked a secret weapon. Image generation is a fun bonus!

The Catch: This "wild west" approach comes with significant risks. Hallucinations – where the AI confidently invents facts – are a major pitfall, making it unreliable for critical work. Furthermore, without proper precautions (like using logged-in, paid enterprise versions), you risk leaking sensitive Intellectual Property (IP). While better prompts can mitigate hallucinations, truly robust answers require deeper integration.

Level 2: The Assistant – Taking Control, One Prompt at a Time

Moving beyond casual querying, you're now building custom AI assistants within these chat interfaces. This means adding your company's specific knowledge base or crafting tailored system prompts to guide the AI's output. Imagine an assistant comparing an NDA to your internal template – that's Level 2 power!

The Catch: This is a fantastic learning phase, helping your team understand AI's nuances. However, early research suggests an initial dip in efficiency, not an increase. Why? The trial-and-error involved in fine-tuning prompts and assistants takes time. While this level will eventually be as common as smartphones, we're all still rookies navigating its complexities.

Level 3: Make it Do Stuff on Its Own – Unleashing Automation

Here, you've graduated from off-the-shelf chats to agentic platforms, designing your own AI-driven workflows. This is where triggers, predefined prompts, and integrations with your CRM, ERP, or file systems (SharePoint, Google Drive) become the norm. You're setting up chatbots with highly specific knowledge. This level offers most of the AI toolkit, often without needing to write a single line of code, and you can choose any LLM or even run them locally.

The Catch: This is a dynamic space. Major platforms are constantly updating, meaning high probability of rebuilding due to obsolescence. Setting up these sophisticated workflows is time-consuming and can demand some data science expertise, even if it's just formatting JSON correctly. This is no longer beginner-level AI.

Level 4: Digital Employees – Your AI Workforce Awakens

Building on Level 3, you're now orchestrating entire sets of agents and workflows, equipping them with knowledge and tools to function as "digital employees." Grouping these agents allows them to perform comprehensive, repeatable tasks like reporting, communication, or file management. AI excels at repetition and boasts the superpower of understanding 100+ languages and file types – from scanned paper copies to Chinese user manuals or PDF invoices, it handles it all. By this stage, your company is likely well-versed in RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation).

The Catch: This advanced level demands significant expertise in setting up and maintaining these intricate agents. A deep understanding of your business processes and the roles being automated is crucial. While the technology is robust, the more "human in the loop" required, the less true automation you achieve. It takes time to adapt to this new way of working!

Level 5: You Own AI – The Frontier of Innovation

At the pinnacle of AI maturity, you're crafting your own fine-tuned LLMs and have left the no-code world behind. AI isn't just a tool; it's a core product. If you're here, you're likely an AI developer or a company whose primary offering is AI.

The Catch: For most organizations not selling AI products, venturing this deep into custom LLM development might be overshooting. The power of custom agents, workflows, and integrated knowledge (RAG) found in Levels 3 and 4 typically provides immense value without the extreme investment of Level 5.

Where do you stand?

The journey through the AI Maturity Index is not just about adopting technology; it's about transforming how you work. Understanding your current level and the path ahead can help you avoid pitfalls, leverage true innovation, and ensure your organization is truly leading, not lagging, in the AI revolution. At Brage AI we can step in at level 4 for you and offer a human interface to the digital employees. You'll learn as we go, but, to start there is an actual human in the room with you.
